Sunday 16th January: Shenley

Mending a puncture!
Photo: Geoff

On a grey winter's morning 12 of us set off from Trent Park on our first club ride of 2022. The weather forecast was dry but as we approached Waggon Road the rain gremlins struck and it looked like the ride was going to be a lot wetter than we had anticipated. Thankfully the rain soon stopped and we even saw a bit of sun later in the day. We made our way through country lanes to Shenley Park where we enjoyed a leisurely lunch. As we set off to return our maintenance skills were put to the test as John suffered two punctures in quick succession. We managed to get it right the second time and found our way home via Barnet with no further incident. Leader Geoff, riders Bridget, Jeff, John F, Marion, Pat, Rosa, Stephen, Sue, Tim, backstops Peter M and Paul.

Sunday 23rd January: Cheshunt

The late Boxing Day ride. We set off from Enfield Park Café east to Albany Park alongside the new wetlands to Waltham Lock, then up to the new(ish) bird hyde at Fishers Green before going to lunch at Cheshunt cafés. Return to Enfield about 2.30pm. Leadet Paul, Riders Bridget, Stephen, Tim, Angie, Geoff, Cathy, Jeff, Rosa, Debbie, Karen, Becky, Peter D, Rachel, Peter M, Backstops Pat, Hyacinth.

Sunday 30th February: Woodberry Wetlands

This was an ad hoc ride arranged at short notice to take advantage of the unseasonably mild weather. A sunny ride from the coffee Break Café, south by Ally Pally and along Parkland Walk. Our lunch stop at the east reservoir café. Return by Spring Hill descent to Lee Valley, Walthamstow Wetlands, photo shoot by Lockwood Resovoir, then north west back to Coffee Break by 2pm. Leader Tim, Riders Paul, Bridget, John, Marion, Peter D, Sue, Rosa, Backstop Pat.

Saturday 5th February: Southend Lakes

This ride was arranged at late notice but 7 of us decided to assemble at Enfield Town Park on a bitterly cold Saturday morning. We soon warmed up as we headed through Gunpowder Park and Waltham Abbey on our way to Southend Farm. Here we sat inside the cafe, out of the cold, and refuelled with various hearty brunches. These were followed by delicious banana and walnut muffins baked and supplied by Debbie. On our return we cycled down Avey Lane, through Gunpowder and Albany Parks before sampling the delights of Edmonton on our way back to the starting point. Leader Geoff, Riders Debbie, Cathy C, Peter M, Pete D, John F, backstop: Jeff.

Saturday 12th February: St Albans Market

This was another short notice ride arranged to take advantage of climate change unseasonably mild weather, although it turned out to be quite cold on the day. We departed Trent Park Café into a biting breeze but, as always, warmed up after a couple of small hills. After making our way along Trotters Bottom to the Horse Bridge we passed through Shenley and London Colney on our way to St Albans. Once there we locked up the bikes and split into groups to explore the market and find somewhere to eat. The return journey had a few unexpected, but not too demanding, hills and saw us travel through Colney Heath and Potters Bar before disbanding at the bottom of Wagon Road. Leader Geoff, Riders Cathy, Debbie, Jeff, John F, Paul L, Pete D, Rosa, Sue, Backstop Bridget.

A mild winters ride from Trent Park. We set off at 09:30 north west by way of Hadley Wood, A1 Bridge, Shenley, to the Sopwell area of St Albans. We parked by the museum and market place 11:20 to then explore and eat lunch at some nice cafés. Regrouping 12:45 for ride back south east through London Colney, Colney Heath, Potters Bar to Trent Park area about 2:30pm. 66 kilometers, or 41 miles in old money.

Sunday 27th February: Southend Lakes

A large peleton set out from Enfield Town Park in glorious sunshine. We negotiated the back streets of Enfield and Brimsdown to reach Gunpowder Park. From here we rode a new route east along Meridian Way before turning off along Lodge Lane and a rather exposed footbridge across the M25 which took us into the suburbs of Waltham Abbey. A mile or so along Honey Lane we turned into a waterlogged bridle path to Southend Farm. I think the cafe was taken aback by the sudden arrival of about 20 customes but they coped admirably and service was very quick in the circumstances. We also enjoyed some home made cup cakes contributed by Rachel for which many thanks.

Return was via Alvey Lane back to Gunpowder Park, then along opposite sides of the park to the morning's ride back to Island Village. The original idea was to ride from here along the Lea towpath, but on the recce ride this route was a mudbath so instead we rode back to Enfield via Alma and Lincoln Roads.

The weather was very kind, with sunshine all the way and it really did feel like the first day of spring. Total distance 19 miles, Leader Peter M; Riders Angie, Ben, Bridget, Cathy, Debbie, Geoff, Hannah, Hyacinth, Jeff, John, Marion, Morna, Paul L, Pete D, Rachel, Rosa; Backstops Tim, Stephen.

Sunday 6th March: Olympic Park

A medium ride from Edmonton Leisure Centre via Walthamstow Wetlands, Hackney Marches to the Olympic Park, and a look at the Orbit Tower. Indoor lunch at café on the Greenway. Return route similar with scenic views and wildlife (and a headwind!) back to Edmonton. Leader Paul, Riders Peter M, Peter D, Morna, Ben, Geoff, Cathy, John, Stephen, Rosa, Karen, Backstops Pat, Hyacinth, Debbie. About 18miles.

Sunday 13th March: Hatfield House

With various weather forecasts predicting different things we weren't quite sure what to expect as we set off in the dry from Trent Park and headed north. After skirting round Potters Bar and continuing via Welham Green we arrived at Hatfield House just as it started to rain. We were able to enjoy a leisurely lunch, away from the rain in the "posh" café before setting off home via Brookmans Park. We did encounter some wet weather on the way back but not enough to dampen our spirits on what was an enjoyable ride. Leader Geoff, Riders Ben, John F, Paul L, Peter D, Peter M, Rosa, Stephen, Tim, Backstops Angie, Pat and Sue.

Sunday 20th March: God's Own Junkyard

A very sunny spring ride from the Coffee Break, eastwards over Lee valley to Walthamstow. On backstreets to the old village area and God's Own Junkyard about 12:00. Exhibits are a quirky mix of antique statues, and 20th c neon signs, some in questionable taste!. Lunch there with 70/80 music. We noted the wild card micro brewery opposite was open. Back to the Coffee Break arouns 2:15pm. Leader Paul L, Riders Peter M, Stephen, Karen, Peter D, Ben, Rosa, Michèle, Sue, Denise, Keeley, Deirdre, Hannah. Backstops Pat, Tim, Hyacinth.

Saturday 26th March: Royden Marina

This was an ad-hoc ride arranged at short notice. Nine of us set off from Beggars Hollow on a beautiful sunny morning but we hadn't got far before Pete had to carry out some drastic brake adjustments on Jeff's bike. With the bike just about road worthy we continued past Cheshunt Park Golf Club and made our way through Hoddesdon and past Rye House Nature Reserve. When almost at our destination Paul's bike suffered a puncture and we found a huge nail had penetrated his tyre. Once this was fixed it didn’t take long to reach Roydon Marina where we found the café open and the weather better than ever. We sat outside and enjoyed our lunch in the sun before setting off home. There were no further mechanical problems as we made our way back through Lea Valley and Gunpowder Park. A nice ride in wonderful sunshine. Leader Geoff, Riders Cathy, Cliff, Deirdre, Paul L, Rosa, Tim, Backstops: Jeff and Pete D.

Sunday 3rd April: Bricket Wood

The weather had cooled since the previous week, but the sun was trying to shine as we set off from Trent Park. The route took us initially along Cockfosters Road, Waggon Road and Trotters Bottom to the A1 horse bridge. From here we made our way to CrossOaks Lane then through Shenley, down Black Lion Hill then left towards Watling Street. After another mile or so we turned off down the wonderfully named Smug Oak Lane and Drop Lane. We were slightly early, and as the pub did not open until noon we stopped at what appeared to be an old ford of the river Ver. We reached the pub bang on midday, and were rewarded with pizzas all round.

After lunch we crossed through Bricket Wood itself, where we passed a very interesting house decorated with murals before skirting Watford and returning via Letchmore Heath and Borehamwood. Finally we climbed Galley Lane into Barnet where we split to find our various routes home. Distance about 32 miles. Leader Peter M, Riders Ben, Bridget, Chris, Geoff, Paul J, Peter D, Rosa, Stephen, Trevor, Singing backstop Jeff.

Sunday 10th April: Kenwood House

A fine sunny spring day, from the Coffee Break café south towards Alexandra Pally, Hornsey, Highgate, reaching Kenwood House at 11.50. A photo call before lunch on the terrace. Returning on a different route with panoramic view at Ally Pally, then back to the Coffee Break around 2:30pm. Leader Bridget, Riders Paul L, Geoff, Cathy, Hayley, Becky, Ben, Keeley, Denise, Trevor, Peter D, Karen, Angie, Maz, Backstop Debbie with cakes, thank you!

Sunday 17th April: Stanstead Abbotts

From Edmonton Leisure Centre east to Lee Valley towpath, meeting 3 more at Waltham Town lock. Then north to Broxbourne Crown, on road on diversion loop with a puncture stop at Rye House. Onward by nature trail path to lunch at Stanstead Abbotts High St. Back via Clayton hill, well done all there! To Edmonton by 3.45pm. Leader Paul, Riders Trevor, Keeley, Denise, Peter M, Peter D, John, Debbie, Rachel, Geoff, Pat, Backstops Karen, Hyacinth.

Sunday 24th April: Tewin

Thirteen riders, including two new members, set off from Beggars Hollow and had to negotiate some roadworks on our way to Cedars Park where we were joined by two others. After cycling the bridge across the A10 we headed North past Cheshunt Park, taking country lanes through Brickendon, Bayford and Hertingfordbury before cutting across to Cole Green and onward to Tewin. We stopped at Bumpkins for lunch which was quite busy so we enjoyed an extended break before setting off for home. There were a few tired legs as we hit more hills on the way back through Letty Green, Essendon, Brookmans Park and Potters Bar but we all battled on regardless. From here a couple of riders decided to brave The Ridgeway but the rest of us went back via Waggon Road where we disbanded at the bottom. Leader Geoff, Riders Cathy, Becky, Ben, Debbie, Denise, Keeley, Paul L, Rosa, Trevor, Cliff, Imran, Roger, Backstops Jeff, Pete D

Sunday 1st May: Hertford

We met at Beggars Hollow in bright sunshine and people began to gather, Geoff and Cathy showed up to wish leader Jeff happy birthday and wish riders well. Couple of chain malfunctions on the outward journey, but considering the big group, not too bad. Enjoyable country lanes wending their way past Cheshunt, Wormley and Brickenden and an easy coast to Hertford. Coffee, cake 'n sarnies were consumed in the pretty gardens of Hertford castle. The homeward route took us up to Hertford Heath and past Haleybury College. There was light rain to accompany us on the way home as the superb leader and nearly birthday boy Jeff took to the old Hertford road with a bit too much vigour and on arriving at Turnford, realized that only three riders were with him. We finally regrouped and did the last few miles round the back of Cheshunt and on to our individual destinations. Everyone had a nice time. Leader Jeff, riders Peter M, Pat B, Paul L, Sue, Birgitta, Keeley, Rosa, John, Debbie, Ben, Trevor, Becky, Angie H, Stephen, backstop Pete D

Saturday 7th May: Thames Path

The Cutty Sark.
Photo Tim:

We set off just after 9.30 from Edmonton Green and had gone less than a mile before we had our first enforced stop...a puncture. This was confidently fixed by helpful club members, then we continued, over to the River Lea, along the towpath heading south, branching off on the Hertford Union Canal, through Victoria Park and onto the Regents Canal, which we followed down to the Thames. There we headed east along the Thames Path to Island Gardens and through the Greenwich foot tunnel to the Cutty Sark where we made a quick stop for the obligatory group pic. Continuing east, we cycled on to Woolwich, past the O2, the iconic Thames Barrier and on to Woolwich, stopping for a while whilst we got the group together after some had veered off the Thames Path! We had lunch in a café in Woolwich, before heading back. Our route took us under the Thames again, up to Beckton on one of the few on-road segments, then along the Greenway to the Olympic Park and back along the River Lea through the Walthamstow Wetlands. Distance 35 miles. Leader: Tim, Riders: Paul, Peter M, Peter D, Josh, Ben, Trevor, John F, Geoff, Angie, Cathy, Denise, Deirdre, Keely, Rosa, Hyacinth, Morna, Sue Backstop Debbie.

Sunday 15th May: Broxbourne

A meandering ride from Edmonton Leisure Centre via Enfield Island Village to the Lee Valley, with a stop at the bird hide at Fishers Green. Then north-east past the farm and up Clayton Hill, Nazeing Roadd to Broxbourne Old Retreat café. Here the rain began, so we ate inside the marquee. Back south on side paths to Cheshunt, Brimsdown and onto Edmonton through heavier rain and solid traffic. Leader Paul L, Riders Trevor, Cliff, Peter D, Rosa, Angela, Debbie, Keeley, Geoff, Ben, Tim, Pat, Imran, Cliff 2, Jeff, Backstops Karen, Peter M.

Sunday 22nd May: Codicote

A sunny day in prospect as sixteen of us met at Beggars Hollow for a longish ride to Codicode. We rode out up Coppers Lane Road, onto the A1000 to Hatfield. From here we followed the cycle path alongside the main road to Welwyn Garden City. One rider dropped out here with a loose seat post and took a train back, while the rest of us continued out to Ayot St. Peter round to Codicote and Spokes Cyclists Cafe for a well earned break. Here we met with another ECC rider who lives in Welwyn Garden City, and who joined us for the first part of the ride back. After numerous toasties we continued through Woolmer Green, Tewin and back to Welwyn Garden City and on to the Northaw Road. Here we split into two groups, a 'fast' and a 'slow' group. But through superior navigation the 'slow' group reached Crews Hill at the same time as the 'fast'! We finally broke up at Beggars Hollow, having notched up 45 miles. Leader Peter M, Riders Angie, Becky, Ben, Cathy, Geoff, Hayley, Imran, Jeff, Keely, Paul, Rosa, Sharon, Stephen, Trevor, Backstops Debbie, Peter D

Eight of us met at Beggars Hollow and set off north along Bury Green Lane to St Mary's School where we picked up three more. From here we continued along Barrow Lane and Silver Street to Goffs Oak, then on to Newgate Street. The weather, while not actually raining, was very damp and forecast to continue like this all day. A short rest at Newgate Street before continuing on Tylers Causeway and the delightfully named Cucumber Lane to Essendon. At Essendon there were many people emerging from the church after presumably a platinum jubilee service, and a vintage Lagonda parked opposite the church. We continued along West End Lane, pausing briefly to repair a puncture, before arriving at the Woodman pub in Wildhill. We had not visited this pub before, and found them very welcoming but unfortunately no food on Sundays! But we made do with tea, crisps and beer before returning through Potters Bar and Crews Hill. About 23 miles. Leader Peter M, Riders Ben, Birgitta, Cliff, Debbie, Paul L, Peter D, Rosa, Trevor Backstop Jeff

Sunday 12th June: Wheathampstead

Ready to depart at Wheathampstead.
Photo: Geoff

Our departure from Trent Park was delayed when one of our members messaged to say that he had gone to Beggars Hollow by mistake. It didn't take him long to find us at the correct meeting point and we set off in the direction of Shenley. After passing through London Colney and cycling around the outskirts of St Albans we took to country lanes to complete our journey to Wheathampstead. Here we split into groups to experience the various refreshments on offer. After lunch we made our way back via Sandridge, Colney Heath and Potters Bar. An enjoyable, leisurely ride in lovely weather. Leader Geoff, Riders Angie, Becky, Cathy, Jayne, Karl, Rosa, Sarah, Stephen, Tim, Backstops Peter M and Pete D.

Paul L led a feeder ride from Beggars Hollow to Waltham Town Lock, where 21 riders braved the Lea Valley on Sunday meandering between white water rapids, woodlands, tiny nettle ridden paths, gravel and mouthfuls of midgeys. All of this to see some delightful sculptures, a lake, Holyfield Weir and Holyfield Viewpoint. The reward at the end was a downhill stretch to some of Rachel's delicious homemade chocolate cupcakes. Leader Rachel, Riders Becky, Ben, Cathy, Cliff(1), Cliff(2), Denise, Geoff, Jeff, John, Keely, Marion, Morna, Pat, Paul J, Paul L, Peter D, Stephen, Trevor, Backstop Peter M

Sunday 26th June: Les Bailey Memorial Ride

Blackmore Ride

This was the opening ride of the day and we set off from Beggars Hollow at 9.00am on our journey to Blackmore and back. Our first real challenge was the climb up Avey Lane but once we had completed this we felt ready for anything. We made good time to Abridge and then encountered more hills on our way to Navestock. Just after this we were delayed when a pedal fell off Angie's new bike. Thanks to Ben, and Geoff's spanner, we were back on our way before too long. After this we had a bit of time to make up but were only 10 minutes late arriving at Blackmore Tea Rooms where we had tables booked for lunch. After a welcome rest consuming large english breakfasts and a variety of sandwiches we embarked on the ride back. Inevitably the pace slowed as legs tired and we tackled more hills but we continued at a speed to suit everyone and enjoyed some lovely countryside on route. We had an extended stop on Theydon Bois green to refuel our energy levels ready for the final push home. Passing through Loughton, High Beach and Enfield Town we arrived at The Little Green Dragon to cheers from the other ECC group who had already returned from their ride to High Beach Church. At LGD we enjoyed a few drinks and delicious cakes provided by Pat. A few words were spoken about Les as we all remembered him fondly and toasted his memory. Les continues to make a huge contribution to ECC and the sponsorship from today's rides has covered our expenses for the coming year and enabled us to make a donation of about £500 to The North London Hospice. This was a fantastic day and thanks go to everyone who contributed to it. Leader Geoff, Riders Angie, Becky, Ben, Bridget, Cliff N, Denise, Jeff, Julian, Tracey, Keeley, Paul J, Paul L, Rosa, Stephen, Tim, Trevor, Backstop Peter M

High Beach Ride

We all met at the Coffee Break Café for our first Memorial Ride for Les Bailey a founder member of the ECC. After our photo shoot we set off at 1pm to High Beach Church in Epping. We cycled down Church Street, through Enfield and up Chingford Lane towards Woodford Green and through some lovely countryside to Epping Forest paths and then proceeded to go up past the bikers' café and onto High Beach Church. We all enjoyed some delicious baked cakes and a cup of tea, then some members went up to the bell tower to ring out the old bells and look round the church. We then proceeded on our return journey down Avey Lane then into Gunpowder Park and through Enfield Island Village where shortly after we met two more riders who joined us for the last leg. We continued through Bush Hill Park and soon after we were in sight of the Little Green Dragon pub where we enjoyed a well deserved rest and a few drinks with some delicious home made cakes laid on by Pat. We had a few speeches and awards to commemorate Les’ Memorial Ride and raised a drink to him in his memory. Leader Maz, Riders Angela, Cathy C, Chris, Deirdre, Hayley, John F, Jonny, Karen, Marion, Rachel, Sue, Will, Backstop Peter D

The rides raised £200 for the club, plus a whopping £580 for the North London Hospice. At our social evening of 18th August we held a presentation of a cheque to the hospice, and certificates to all who took part. Huge thanks to all concerned.

Sunday 10th July: Harlow Town Park

Eleven of us set off from Beggars Hollow at 9.30am and met up with Debbie at the entrance to Enfield Crematorium. We made our way through Albany Park, Enfield Island Village and Gunpowder Park to Waltham Abbey. Shortly after this, and in sweltering heat, we faced our first hill challenges of the day in the form of Horseshoe Hill and Crown Hill. The going then got easier as we continued through Epping Green and on to Harlow Park. We enjoyed a leisurely lunch in the sun at Spurriers House Café and viewed the wildlife on display. On our return we passed by Roydon before making our way through Lee Valley to Fishers Green. Tim's bike developed a worrying noise and close inspection revealed a broken spoke. The spoke was clipped off but this didn't cure the noise. Thankfully though Tim was able to cycle the rest of the way back safely. At Fishers Green we stopped for ice creams and bumped into Chris Aspin who was working in the park at the time. We completed our journey via Cheshunt railway station, Cedars Park and finally the A10 cycle paths where we discovered that the underpasses by the M25 have now reopened. Leader Geoff, riders Cliff N, Debbie, Jeff, John F, Keeley, Pat, Paul L, Pete D, Sue, Tim, Backstop Cathy C.

Sunday 17th July: Parks and Prey + Hilly Fields Picnic

A breezy flat 9 mile feeder road ride with 9 riders who braved the heatwave. Through Cedar Park, displaying spectacular flowers, a war machine and maze, mostly cycle lanes past Turkey St, Great Cambridge Rd, Albany Church, through Durrants Park, (where Peter D & Trevor showed their skills at repairing a puncture), Brimsdown, Enfield Lock, along the tow path to Waltham Abbey for a delightful lunch at Kalik café where a table had been reserved for the us in the shade. After lunch the riders arrived at Hillyfields and took over a shady spot where another 5 members joined. We were entertained by the SoulFools with a varied repertoire and Rachel's homemade sausage rolls and choc chip cupcakes (for all dietary requirements). Leaders: Paul L (Feeder) + Rachel Riders: Andy, Cathy C, Dave, Geoff C, Peter D, Trevor Backstop: Debbie Others who joined the picnic: Brigitta, Jeff, Peter M, Sue, Tim.

Sunday 24thJuly: Emirates Cable Car

We met at Edmonton Leisure Centre for a 9.30 start and cycled over to the River Lea and down the tow path to the Hertford Union Canal and through Victoria Park to the Regents Canal, which we followed down to the Limehouse Basin, where we joined the Thames Path. Heading east, we made our way to Island Gardens through the foot tunnel to Greenwich, then took the southern Thames Path round to the O2. We paired up and took the cable car with our bikes over to Victoria Docks, admiring the view on the way. Once on the other side we had our lunch stop before making our way up to the Greenway, taking us back to the Olympic Park, where we made our way along the River Lea to the Walthamstow Wetlands. We stopped again to enjoy a delicious ice cream, then cycled back to Edmonton. Leader: Tim; Backstop: Karen; Riders: Peter M, Peter D, Paul, Cliff, Jos, Hyacinth, Keeley, Denise, Debbie, Marion, Rosa. Distance 28 Miles. Weather: warm and sunny.

Sunday 31st July: Lewis Ice Cream Farm

A large group of up to 20 riders gathered at the Coffee Break for a ride to the Lewis Ice Cream Farm in Barnet. The route was far from direct: we started off south towards Ally Pally and the Parkland Walk around Muswell Hill, then headed to East Finchley and up Barnet Council's apology for a cycle route along the A1000. We turned off towards Avenue House and Gardens, where the original plan was to stop for coffee. But we realised that to serve 20 people individually would take an unreasonably long time, so we pressed on. Our next landmark was Finchley Garden Village, from where we followed the Dollis Brook path to Barnet and the second major hill of the ride. Finally we were rewarded by ice creams, which some of us consumed more daintily than others. Leader Peter M (out) / Birgitta (back) : Riders Ben, Cathy, Cliff, Debbie, Geoff, Hal, Jeff, Keely, Marion, Maz, Paul L, Sarah, Stephen, Sue: Backstops Birgitta (out) / Peter D (back)

Sunday 14th August: Richmond Park

Paul L came to give us a warm send off as 12 riders departed from the Coffee Break Café and cycled into the hot summer sun. After passing through Arnos Park we headed towards Friern Barnet and Golders Green, keeping to side roads as much as possible. With temperatures heading into the 30s we continued at a moderate pace to Cricklewood and eventually crossed the Thames via Chiswick Bridge. On arriving at Richmond Park we all decided, in spite of the heat, to complete a lap of the park and stop at the Pembroke Lodge Caf%eacute; en route. We found a shady spot to enjoy lunch and a drink or two. With all water bottles replenished we completed the lap, spotting some deer on our way. The return route took us across Putney Bridge and through Fulham. We passed several pubs full of football supporters preparing for the Chelsea v Tottenham game. Jeff took his life in his hands by winding some of them up with his Tottenham chants. By the time we reached Hyde Park the heat was taking its toll and we made another refreshment stop at the Bowling Green Café. We then made our way back to Winchmore Hill via Regents Park, Camden, Hornsey and Wood Green. A hot but very enjoyable day. Leader: Geoff, Riders: Calin, Cliff N, Denise, Jeff, Keeley, Marion, Pat, Pete D, Peter M, Trevor, Backstop: Cathy C

Thursday 18th August: Review of the Les Bailey Memorial Ride

About 30 club members attended this celebration of the ride last June, where we organised two sponsored rides in memory of Les. The aim was to raise sufficient funds to keep the club sovent for another year and donate the surplus to the North London Hospice, who provided invaluable support to Les and his family during his last few weeks. After a short introduction from Geoff, Bridget read a poem celebratng Les and his contribution to ECC. Then the highlight of the event was the presentation of a cheque for £580 to Alycia Miller from the NL Hospice. Alycia adressed some warm thanks to the club, saying it was only through efforts like ours that the hospice could continue its work in the community. After the presentation of the cheque, Paul and Maz presented certificates to all who had participated in the rides. The rest of the evening was spent socialising, reminiscing and eating Rachel's delicious cup cakes.

Saturday 17th September: Chipperfield

On a sunny but crisp Saturday morning a small group of three set off from Trent Park and headed North West towards Shenley. We then headed further west through Abbots Langley and Kings Langley hitting some quite challenging hills en route. We stopped at Chipperfield and sat outside in the sun to enjoy some welcome food and drink. After lunch we completed a short circuit of the village before heading off home via North Watford and Borehamwood. The last part of our journey took us along Galley Lane and while pausing briefly by the Arkley Pub we encountered Cathy riding back from the Ice Cream Farm. She joined us for the last couple of miles before we split up and went our separate ways. A nice ride which has hopefully prepared us well for London to Southend next week. Leader Geoff, riders and joint backstops Tim and Pete D.

The weather played along nicely for Angie's debut as ride leader tackling the scenic but hilly route to Hertford and back. The group of 11 set off for their 30-mile journey from Enfield Town Park Café on a sunny, warm autumn morning riding towards Goffs Oak, off-roading it through Broxbourne Woods, where they momentarily appeared to have lost three riders, onwards to Brickendon into Hertford. Finding a good lunch option seemed more challenging than Carbone Hill, the worst hill en route. The way back led to Hertingfordbury, Bayford, Epping Green, Newgate Street, and Cuffley, ending back in Enfield. All cyclists kept a good pace throughout and made it back early. A drink and chat at the Crown and Horseshoes rounded the afternoon off. Ride leader: Angie, joined by Tim as second in command, Riders Geoff, Jeff, Paul, Cliff, Marion, Peter M., Ben, Pat (part ride), Backstop Stephen.

This ride was rescheduled from October. Once again it had been raining for several hours before the start, but we had complete faith in the weather forecast which told us it would clear up and become bright and sunny. So it turned out as we rode into London following all the twists and dog-legs of route CS1. Eventually we reached the Embankment, where we stopped for a photo opportunity opposite the London Eye. We continued past the Houses of Parliament and up to Buckingham Palace, where there were military bands playing and a huge crowd. We became briefly split up here, as the police directed us along different routes, but came together again to ride into Hyde Park, then finally through Chelsea to Battersea Park. A change of plan followed, as there was a huge queue at the cafe so instead we continued to Battersea Power Station where there were stalls selling all sorts of snacks. Return along the South Bank, where we had to dismount several times due to the press of pedestrians, then back the way we came to Edmonton. Total distance was about 32 miles. Leader Peter M, riders Andrew, Cliff, Debbie, Geoff, Jeff, John, Keely, Pat, Peter D, Stephen, backstop Cathy.

Sunday 27th November: Elstree Aerodrome

Once again the weather was looking doubtful at the start of the ride. But buoyed by an ever changing forecast (so we could pick the version we liked best) and our innate optimism seven riders set out from Trent Park in damp but not hard rain. We rode through East Barnet, Mays Lane and the back streets of Borehamwood to reach Watling Street. Here we headed around the delightfully named Butterfly Lane to Aldenham Road, which we found to be flooded! The leader bravely went first to test the depth, which turned out to be a few inches and just about passable. We reached the aerodrome, where the cafe was open but it seemed the low cloud base had stopped virtually all the aircraft movements. Return via Letchmore Heath, Borehamwood again and Barnet, where we split to our various routes home. Leader Peter M, Riders Birgitta, Deirdre, Geoff, Marion, Stephen, Backstop Peter D. Plus Tim who met us at the cafe.

Sunday 4th December: Dobbs Weir

On a very cold, cloudy morning eleven of us set off from Beggars Hollow and made our way towards Enfield Island Village. We hadn't gone far when one of our number returned home due to a damaged tyre on his bike. The rest of us continued on our way through Gunpowder Park and up to Waltham Abbey. At this point another member of the team decided to call it a day and left the group. The remaining nine cycled on through Lea Valley Park and made their way to Dobbs Weir. Here we warmed up and enjoyed some hot lunches in the River Palace Café. We returned home mainly by road passing close to the Old Mill Retreat and Cheshunt Park Golf Course. The route included one or two hills, notably Holy Cross Hill, but there were fewer complaints than usual as the hills did at least give us an opportunity to combat the cold. We dispersed at Bullsmoor Lane and made our own ways home. Leader Geoff, Riders Angie, Bridget, Imran, Jeff, John F (part), Paul L, Peter M, Stephen, Backstop Cathy.

Sunday 11th December: Christmas Lights

Cancelled due to snow and ice.

Thursday 15th December: Christmas Social

A well attended social evening at Winchmore Hill Sports CLub, with snacks and mince pies bought by members. Also some lively 'adapted' seasonal singing with Peter D on Morna's electric piano. Thanks to everyone who attended and especially to Pat.

Sunday 18th December: Christmas Lunch

With snow and ice still all around no-one felt like cycling, but a well organised car share plus public transport meant we all arrived in time at Highams Hill Community Café for a festive meal. Our heartfelt thanks to Maz for organising, and to the drivers.

Monday 26th December: Boxing Day Ride

A bright sunny ride, Edmonton, Brimsdown, and Waltham lock, Lee valley paths, west to Cheshunt Pond Café for lunch about 12:30. After an unexpected puncture (what other kind is there?), we rode back via the A10 cycle track Enfield arriving c 2:30 pm. Leader Paul, Riders Pat, Ben, Morna, Debbie, Sarah, Jeff, Backstops Peter D, Bridget. Guest Chris.
