Sunday 14th January 2024: Broxnourne Old Mill Retreat

The first ride of the year started on a cold but crisp morning from Edmonton Leisure Centre. We rode north on Meridian Way path, then a short towpath section to Gunpowder Park, From there into Lee Valley Park, up to Fishers Green and over Clayton Hill. Then west to lunch inside the Old Mill Retreat café. Leaving the café at, we made a quicker return along Hertford Rd to Cheshunt and A10 cycle path towards Enfield, where riders peeled off to make their own ways home from about 2:30pm. Leader Paul; Riders Geoff, Cathy Peter M, Peter D, Debbie, Ben, Richard, David, Stephen, Tim; Backstop Karen.

Sunday 28th January: Elstree Aerodrome

After making a chilly start from a closed Trent Park Café the sun appeared and we all got warmer as we pedalled up Waggon Road. After crossing the Horse Bridge at the end of Trotters Bottom we made our way through the quiet country lanes surrounding Ridge towards Shenley Park. We passed the Orchard Café without stopping and enjoyed the downhill drop towards Radlett. From here we headed up Loom Lane and down to Aldenham Road for the final stretch to Elstree Aerodrome. We found tables in the crowded café and enjoyed lunch whilst observing the aircraft and helicopter activity outside. We took a shorter route back passing through Elstree and Borehamwood before cycling up Galley Lane to The Arkley. Here we said our goodbyes and split into smaller groups to make our way home. Leader Geoff; Riders Debbie, Jeff, Pat, Peter M, Stephen, Sue; Backstop Cathy C.

Sunday 4th February: Copped Hall Snowdrops

A mild winter's day and our first start from Halfway House Enfield. It was an early start at 9:00am eastbound to Lee Valley, Avey Lane, towards Upshire and the hill of the day. Taking a left turn into Copped Hall estate by grand gates, down a rough track to the house. After paying for entrance most had a tea or coffee plus cake in the former racquets court, now a café! Then a glorious self guided map tour of extensive gardens and snowdrops display, some or which were for sale. Then lunch before return ride 1:20, delayed by a lost glove which was found at entrance gate. The ride into a west wind arrived back in Enfield by 2.15. Leader Bridget; Riders Paul, Stephen, Debbie, Geoff, Richard, Jeff, Deirdre, Sue, Rosa, John, Adrian, Cliff' Backstop Cathy.

Sunday 11th February: Abridge

A bright start from Coffee Break café in Winchmore Hill, eastwards to Edmonton, Chingford, Woodford, Loughton and over the M11 by Chigwell. Then along the A113 to Abridge for lunch at Boardelis café. Returning over bridge across the swollen Roding river onto Theydon Bois, High Beach, North Enfield and back to the Coffee Break about 2.30pm. Leader Jeff; Riders Geoff, Bridget, Stephen, Pat, Paul, Rosa, Tim, David, Debbie, John, Cliff R; Backstop Peter M.

Sunday 18th February: Hatfield House

Cancelled due to rain

Sunday 25th February: God's Own Junkyard

A dry start from the Coffee Break café, east to Edmonton, Meridian Way, the Lea Valley and Walthamstow Wetlands. From here we rode past the Pumphouse Museum (without stopping: we did visit here last November), across Hoe St to Gods Own Junkyard at 11.30. Although the food selection was limited, we did enjoy some cakes and scones while viewing the dazzling neon lights and quirky antiques. Returning through Lea Valley at Blackhorse Lane and finishing up at Edmonton Leisure Centre. Leaderr Paul; Riders Geoff, Cathy, Adrian, Richard, Pat, Debbie, Peter M, David; Backstop Karen.

Sunday 3rd March: Woodberry Wetlands

Fourteen of us left Coffee Break promptly at 9.45 and cycled through Palmers Green and on to Ally Pally, where we encountered our first hill, up through the park and onto the first part of the Parklands Walk around Muswell Hill. This off road section was a little muddy after all the rain of the previous days but we got through it ok, passing walkers and dogs en route. We then climbed our second and last hill up to Highgate Station and onto the second section of the Parkland Walk, equally muddy. We rode through Finsbury Park and round to the Wetlands café, where we enjoyed our refreshments in the sun. For our return we headed over through Stamford Hill to Springfield Park where we had an enforced stop because of a puncture. Once the inner tube was replaced we rode back through the Walthamstow Wetlands and back to Edmonton, where the ride finished and riders dispersed. It was a very pleasant, but occasionally muddy ride in the sun, meaning all our bikes needed a good clean on our return! Leader: Tim; Riders: Cathy, Marion, Pat, Deirdre, Karen, Paul, Geoff, Stephen, Imran, Dave P, Richard, Adrian; Backstop: Peter M.

Saturday 9th March: Bumpkin, Tewin

Welcomed the peleton as they arrived at Beggars Hollow, most sporting bright yellow, set off down Clay Hill and on our way past Forty Hall to Maidens Bridge on to Bulls Cross, the bike is purring. Stephen is back stop for the outward journey and the sun is shining, we took on hills alongside Cheshunt golf course and on to Paradise Lane and Holy Cross Hill. We have a breather and drink after climbing, we get to Brickendon and more picturesque scenery village ponds at Bayford , church at Hertingfordberry then a sharp left towards Cole and Letty Green and across a major road and downhill to the vicinity of Tewin another cheeky little hill as you get into Tewin where we went to Bumpkins in the sunshine with the braying of horses. Tea cakes, omelette and fry ups were consumed with beverages, Team photo then back on the road back the way we came till we headed west to Essendon via the hill, jelly beans were munched then onwards in ever darkening skies to Brookmans Park and then Potters Bar and the ever popular Coopers lane we coasted down there to Cattlegate Road past Crews Hill golf club and down back to Beggars Hollow and after saying our farewells home for a rest. Leader Jeff; Riders Pat, Rosa, Geoff, Cathy, David, Cliff of Waltham, Cliff, Keeley, Richard, Peter M; Backstop Stephen

Sunday 17th March: Southend Farm Lakes

The forecast was rain up to 10am, drier by 11am. So the leader took a late decision to delay the start until 10:30. This was looking dubious, as by 10:15 it was still hammering down but as if by magic it eased off at 10:30. By then eight of us had gathered at Beggars Hollow, and we set off along a fairly familiar route involving Goat Lane, the A10, Albany Park and Gunpowder Park. We picked up another couple of riders along the way, as we approached Southend farm by the back route along Honey Lane. At the farm we met with another rider, and settled down to an early lunch which seemed to largely comprise bacon sandwiches. The return ride proved rather eventful: barely had we left the grounds before we stopped for puncture number 1. After fixing this we rode on to Avey Lane and back through Gunpowder Park to the Prince of Wales Open Space, where punctures number 2 and 3 occurred in quick succession. Undaunted, we fixed these (eventually – one road bike tyre proving exceptionally difficult to remove and replace!) and continued towards Enfield, with various riders peeling off along the way to find their most convenient route home. Overall, it must be a record for the slowest return from Southend Farm, taking about 2.5 hours. Leader Peter M; Riders Adrian, Tim, Richard, Cliff of Waltham, Pat, Debbie, Stephen, Paul, Geoff; Backstop Cathy

Sunday 24th March: Hatfield House

13 riders assembled at Trent Park suitably attired for a dry but cold and windy morning. After making our way through Potters Bar and up to Welham Green we made a brief stop to sort out a puncture before continuing uneventfully to our destination. At Hatfield House we sat outside in the sun to enjoy our lunch and some followed this with an exploration of the courtyard. The ride home took us back to Welham Green before heading towards Brookmans Park and Monken Hadley. We went our separate ways at the bottom of Beech Hill with some returning via Trent Park and others heading up Ferney Hill towards the Ridgeway. Leader Geoff; Riders Adrian, Bridget, Deirdre, Jeff, Marion, Paul L, Peter M, Richard, Stephen, Tim, Michael; Backstop Cathy C.

Sunday 7th April: Stanstead Abbotts

Riding from Edmonton Green on cycle paths north via Brimsdown, Lee Valley, Clayton Hill, past the sailing club to Dobbs Weir, Rye House nature reserve to Stanstead Abbotts café. Return on Hoddesdon Rd and Lee Valley to Broxbourne, Cheshunt and the A10 cycle path to the Enfield area. About 35 miles. Leader Paul; Riders Marion, Debbie, Richard, Cliff R, Geoff, Mustafa, Neeraj; Backstop Peter M..

Despite the closed cafe and the unlucky rider count of 13, we met in buoyant spirits at Trent Park for a repeat of last year's ride to Bricket Wood. We set off up Waggon Road, where sadly one rider had to pull out due to mechanical problems, and across to the A1 horse bridge. From here we rode in stately progression through Shenley, greatly enjoying the thrill of descending Black Lion Hill. The final outward leg took us to along a pretty riverside lane to some underwater stepping stones across the river Ver. We waited here a few minutes so as not to arrive early at the pub, before making our way up to the Gate in Bricket Wood. The weather was becoming quite springlike as we sat outside with our delicious pizzas. Returning via the Picture House, Aldenham Village, Letchmore Heath and Borehamwood, we finished up at the top of Galley Lane in Arkley. From here the riders dispersed to take their separate ways home. Total distance about 30 miles. Leader Peter M; Riders Adrian, Angie, Birgitta, Geoff, Imran, Marion, Neeraj, Paul, Richard, Rosa; Backstops Pat, Sue

Sunday 21st April: Hertford

On a dry and sunny but not particularly warm morning, eight of us set off from Beggars Hollow and made our way past Forty Hall towards the A10 where we picked up another rider. From here we headed towards Cheshunt after which we were cycling mainly on country lanes as we skirted around Hoddesdon and on to Hertford. At Hertford we sourced food and drinks from various outlets, mainly Greggs, and sat outside to enjoy our lunch. The return journey saw us pass through Hertfordingfordbury, Letty Green and Essendon before hitting Brookmans Park and Potters Bar. We finished by cycling down Coopers Lane Road and through Crews Hill back to Beggars Hollow. An enjoyable ride in spite of (or because of?) the hills. Leader Geoff; Riders Bridget, Debbie, Deirdre, Jeff, Richard N, Rosa, Stephen; Backstop Cathy.

Sunday 5th May: Queens Wood

While several members were abroad exploring the hills of Holland, a select group joined this half day ride out to Queens Wood, Highgate. We met at the Coffee Break and rode around the back of Palmers Green to Arnos Park, then across New Southgate and through the Islington and Camden Cemetery in East Finchley. We finished up at the back of Muswell Hill and so into Queens Wood, where we stopped at the delightful café there. Return by the familiar route past Ally Pally and Palmers Green to Winchmore Hill by about 1pm. We were lucky with the weather, which was at last beginning to show signs of Spring, although of course this meant all the shared pedestrian/cyclist paths were thronging! The leader was experimenting three route trackers running simultaneously, and these recorded distances of 13.2, 13.4 and 13.9 miles. So let's say about 13½ miles. Leader Peter; Riders Debbie, Rosa, Marion, John F.

Sunday 19th May: High Beach motorbikers' café then tea and cakes at the church

A relaxing late morning ride from Edmonton Leisure Centre eastward to Chingford on cycle path by A406. Then on side roads and through a woody glade to Queen Elizabeth I hunting lodge. A short tarmac road ride to Fairmead Road in the forest which took us to the motorbikers' café by lunchtime. Here we enjoyed some traditional fry-ups in a nice sunny and shady seating area. Suitably fortified, a short five minute ride took us to Holy Innocents' church for tea and cakes around 2pm. The return ride at about 3pm was by Mott Street, Enfield Island Village, Green Street, the A10 cycle track to the Enfield area, where we split off home. Leader Paul; Riders Jeff, Hal, Sarah, Debbie, Imran, Dave, Bernie, Stephen, Cliff R, Ben, Colin; Backstop Bridget. We were also joined by Tim and his daughter for part of the ride.

Sunday 26th May: Greenwich

Ten of us gathered in Edmonton for our ride to Greenwich. The start was slightly delayed because of a short rain shower, and as we were about to set off the ride leader discovered he had a puncture. Twenty minutes later, we set off and rode down to the River Lea, along the towpath to Victoria Park, through the park and onto the Regents Canal, down to the Thames Path, which we followed to Island Gardens. Unfortunately the lifts weren't working, so we locked up our bikes, walked through the foot tunnel and spent an hour having lunch in Greenwich Market, most enjoying good old pie and mash. Our ride back took us an alternative route to the one planned, as the Ride London event had led to road closures. We went back along the Thames Path then along the Limehouse Cut to the River Lea. From there we cycled through the Olympic Park and along the river to the Walthamstow Wetlands and back to Edmonton, stopping briefly for a well deserved ice cream. Leader: Tim, Riders: Paul, Geoff, Cathy, Adrian, Imran, Stephen, Rosie, Rosa, Backstop: Debbie.

We assembled at Beggars Hollow, where we found the café had re-opened, and set off down Clay Hill towards the A10. After passing through Enfield Crematorium and Albany Park we headed for Enfield Island Village and Gunpowder Park. Riders had been warned that there would be some hills and we tackled the first of these as we made our way up Avey Lane. We then enjoyed a relatively flat and downhill section to Theydon Bois before encountering Piercing Hill as our next challenge. After passing through Epping Upland and Thornwood we arrived at North Weald Airfield with its busy Saturday Market. We also discovered that a D-Day memorial event was taking place so we were lucky enough to see some old second world war planes landing and taking off. Although the weather was dry and the forecast had promised warmish temperatures we hadn't counted on the strong winds which were particularly noticeable in the open surroundings of the airfield. Some decided to spend their time exploring the market, with copious examples of Essex bling, while most of us cycled around the airfield perimeter to Wings Café. Here the food was good but some mix ups over our orders resulted in a delay to our departure. On the way back we passed through Coopersale and Fiddlers Hamlet before heading back down to Theydon Bois. We managed to find a couple of hill challenges on the way back, noticeably the long trek up Coppice Row, but after this we enjoyed the downhill stretch of Mott Street before making our way home. Leader Geoff; Riders Angie, Bridget, Cliff R, Jeff, Maria, Michael, Paul L, Peter M, Sarah C, Sarah M, Tim; Backstop Rosa.

Sunday 9th June: Ware

The café at Beggars Hollow has reopened, but it took ten minutes to serve coffee as we gathered for the start of the ride. Still we managed to set off more or less on time as we rode the familiar route to Holy Cross Hill, Brickendon and Bayford. We came across a 'Road Closed' notice outside Hertingfordbury, but pushed on and found there was just enough room to squeeze past the roadworks. Then up Bramfield Road, across to Waterford and up (yet another) hill to Saccombe Road. Logically, this took us to Saccombe Park although we had to cross a very busy A602 first. Making our way along some quiet country lanes with buzzards flying above we made it to the old A10 and so into Ware. Here we stopped for lunch at a pavement cafe before returning via a shorter and flatter route through Stanstead Abbotts and the Lee Valley, reaching the Enfield area about 3pm. About 39 miles. Leader Peter M; Riders Bridget, Jeff, Pat, Paul, Marion, Cliff (part of ride); Backstops Stephen, Rosa.

Sunday 16th June: Broxbourne Old Mill

A regular ride from Edmonton Leisure Centre, using Meridian Way, some towpath to Waltham Cross and into Lee Valley Park. Past the park farms to ascend Clayton Hill and ride west to the café, arriving about 12.30. Lunch outside in sunshine then the return route on back paths adjacent to the towpath as far as to Cheshunt railway bridge ramp. Onto the cycle path by the A10 to finish at the Hilly Fields music event at 3pm, with sounds from the 60s and 70s. Leader Paul; Riders Geoff, Cathy, Debbie, Pat, Jeff, Richard, Cliff R; Backstop Karen.

Sunday 23rd June: Les Bailey Memorial Ride 1: Hertfordshire Circular

Lunchtime at Spokes
Lunchtime at Spokes.

On a warm morning 14 of us set off from outside the Little Green Dragon and made our way towards Trent Park and Waggon Road. Here we took on another 3 riders before heading north towards Potters Bar and Brookmans Park. Shortly after passing through Welham Green we encountered our first puncture of the day and sorting this out threw up a few complications. As a result we had a lengthy delay before continuing on to Sandridge. Unbelievably, another bike then suffered a puncture and this time, after puzzling for some time over why no-one’s pump seemed to be working, we discovered that the replacement inner tube also had a hole. Once sorted and back on route we soon moved on to quiet country lanes as we headed towards Ayot St Peter and Old Welwyn. We then made our way to Codicote and Spokes Café for lunch. Passing through a ford on the way gave some of us damp feet. We were now way behind schedule but decided to have a leisurely lunch anyway. Just before setting off we then found that the first puncture of the day had gone flat again! Luckily, being at Spokes, we could hand over to their workshop and they discovered that the problem was a spoke protruding through the wheel rim. When we eventually got on our way we had a fairly uneventful ride home passing through Tewin, Hertingfordbury, Bayford, Epping Green, Newgate Street and Cuffley. I haven't mentioned hills yet, but I can tell you there were quite a few. By the time we were back at the Little Green Dragon I think we all felt we had earned some liquid refreshment. Leader Geoff; Riders Bridget, Cliff N, Dave P, Imran, Jayne (part), Jeff, John (guest), Karl (part), Keeley, Paul L, Peter M, Richard N, Sarah M (part), Tim; Backstops Rosa, Stephen

Sunday 23rd June: Les Bailey Memorial Ride 2: High Beach (The tasty option)

Nine of us set off from the Coffee Break café, at a leisurely pace, waved off by Maz. Lead rider Chris and back stop Peter D. A couple of minor detours along the way but no incidents, some adjustments were made to Alans' steering by Peter D. (although I'm sure this was just to get extra points!). We all made it to the bikers café at High Beach, where we stopped for lunch, some ordering the baguettes which were too large for the average person to eat! We then set off for a 5 minute ride to the Church which satisfied our sweet tooth with their delicious cakes. After relaxing and gorging ourselves we set off for the downward leg of our ride to the Little Green Dragon to quench our thirst and enjoy the after ride memorial party.

Sunday 30th June: Kenwood

An overcast early morning start at 9am prompt from Coffee Break café, along the cycle path on the regular route by Palmers Green, Alexandra Palace, Hornsey and then stopped at Kenwood House and café for refreshments. A few of us visited the house to look at the paintings. We returned via Parkland Walk old railway line, back at 12. Leader Bridget, Riders Geoff, Cathy, Dave P, Bernie, Rosa, Daniel, Peter M (Part), Stephen, Paul, Richard and backstop Jeff.

Sunday 7th July: St Albans

We met at Oakwood station and set off in sun with few clouds, We took the Potters Bar to Welham Green route then on to Smallford and Sandridge for a brief stop where three riders left for other social engagements and to avoid the promised rain. Then on to St Albans city and the nice little Italian café where whilst eating our sarnies the rain started pelting down outside. We set off post lunch in the rain but after a short while it abated so we had our spirits lifted slightly only to be dashed by heavy rain around Galley Lane and a good soaking. Some took refuge in the Arkley pub while others decided they couldn't get any wetter and carried on home. Although we got soaked everyone had a fun time and found the drenching character building, A reviving hot shower and a rest were welcome after the ride. Leader Jeff; Riders Karl, Stephen, Jayne, Rosa, Richard, Pat, Sue.

Sunday 14th July: Ace Café

A return trip to this iconic café which we first visited last November. Nine riders set out from the Coffee Break and followed a very convoluted route across north west London, basically riding parallel to, and north of, the A406 North Circular Road. We passed the StoneX Stadium in Mill Hill, some narrow paths around Hendon, skirted the Welsh Harp reservoir then through trading estates in Wembley to reach the Ace around midday. Here we settled down to some traditional British fry-ups while admiring the couple of hundred or so motor bikes parked outside. After lunch we followed another route, this time south of the A406, which took us through Dollis Hill, Willesden, Hampstead Garden Suburb and Muswell Hill before splitting for our separate homeward paths at Palmers Green. About 31 miles. Leader: Peter M; Riders: Debbie, Geoff, Jeff, Paul, Richard, Rosa, Tim; Backstop: Stephen.

Sunday 28th July: Wheathampstead

Nine of us assembled at Trent Park on a lovely warm morning and were pleasantly surprised when a new member turned up who had seen the ride publicised on our website. We were pleased to see the café open again, although prices seemed to have increased a bit. We set off along Cockfosters Road, up Waggon Road and on to Shenley. After skirting around St Albans and Sandridge the remainder of our outward journey was mainly along quiet country lanes which, in the hot temperatures, we took at a leisurely pace. We stopped for an hour in Wheathampstead and dispersed to sample the various food and drink options in the village. We then headed back along more country lanes towards Sandridge before making our way to Colney Heath, Potters Bar and back down Waggon Road. Here we said our goodbyes and went our separate ways home. Leader: Geoff; Riders: Chris, Jeff, Pat, Peter M, Richard N, Rosa, Siobhan; Backstop: Cathy C.

An early start for our second ever ride to Teddington, but an eventful one! We got the train to Blackfriars, changing at Finsbury Park, however two of the group missed the train at Finsbury Park but fortunately caught up with the rest at a café in Chelsea. Once we were back together, we cycled along the Thames path to Fulham, over Putney Bridge, continuing on the south side through Putney, Barnes, Chiswick to Kew Bridge, where we went around Kew Gardens to Richmond, before rejoining the Thames Path along to Teddington lock. Here we left the river, going into Richmond Park, where we had our lunch stop in the sun. After lunch we left the park, crossed onto Wimbledon Common and made our way to the iconic windmill for our next stop. It was very interesting to read about its history, different windmills and their use. Our return route took us through Earlsfield, Wandsworth Common to Clapham Common. Here we joined the CS7 cycle path right the way back to Blackfriars for the train home to Winchmore Hill. It was a long day, but an enjoyable one. Leader Tim, Backstop Richard, Riders Geoff, Peter M, Imran, Paul, Pat.

Sunday 11th August: Lewis Ice Cream Farm

Meeting at Oakwood Park Café 10.30 for a first time brunch style setting. Riding off around 11.30 north east to Cockfosters, New Barnet, Monken Hadley on back roads then to Wood St and down Galley Lane to Lewis's. We enjoyed a cooling wide range of ices, with about 50 flavours on offer. Return ride through Monken Hadley, and some off road which we walked as the surface was very loose and repairs not complete. The ride ended back at Oakwood Park café. Leaders Bridget, Paul; Riders Peter D,Jeff, Sarah C, Debbie, Angie, Richard, Marion, Stephen; Backstop Peter M. At café only: Sue, Hal, Maz, John.

Sunday 18th August: Harlow Town Park

Seven riders set off from Beggar's Hollow and we picked up three more on route. After making our way through Gunpowder Park to Waltham Abbey we headed towards Upshire where we tackled Horseshoe Hill and Crown Hill. We then continued in the happy knowledge that we had completed the two most challenging climbs of the day. After a short spell along the Epping Road we turned north to Epping Green before forking right into the outskirts of Harlow. When we arrived at Harlow Park we found it busy with families enjoying the summer sun and settled down to a leisurely lunch at Spurriers House Café. Our return saw us pass through Roydon and cycle through Lee Valley Park where we were treated by Dave to some very welcome ice creams. After this we headed west to Cheshunt and back to Bullsmore Lane where we split up and went our separate ways. Leader: Geoff; Riders: Cliff R (part), Dave P, Debbie, Jeff, Mustafa, Pat, Paul L, Rosa; Backstop: Cathy C.

Saturday 24th August: The Bumkin at Tewin

Postponed due to heavy rain.

Sunday 1st September: Queens Wood and the Palmers Green Festival

The forecast was a bit worrying (thunderstorms) but it was fine and sunny as we met up at the Coffee Break and so it remained. Setting off down to Palmers Green, past the former house of the poet Stevie Smith (Not Waving but Drowning), through Arnos Park and Islington Cemetery before arriving at the café in Queens Wood. Here we had a break, while the café service was not the fastest the food and drinks were worth the wait. About midday we set off back through Ally Pally Park to Palmers Green where the ride ended, although some of us went on the the Palmers Green festival in Broomfield Park. Here there were a variety of stalls featuring local community groups as well as food, drink and donkey rides. Leader Peter M; Riders Cathy, Colin, Dave P, David, Geoff, Marion, Paul, Stephen, Sue; Backstop Bridget.

Sunday 8th September: Broxbourne

A dry start after heavy rain overnight. From Beggar's Hollow we rode east to Enfield Lock, north on NCR1 and Lee Valley park to Clayton Hill, We chose this route as the towpath was very wet. We arrived at the café at 12:30 and ate our lunch in sunny weather! The return route saw a detour into the Turnford fishing lakes on a narrowing grass path, which eventually forced us to turn back to the tarmac path, southwards to Cheshunt Station and cycle paths to Enfield about 2.30 pm. Leader Paul; Riders Peter M, Geoff, Debbie, David, Imran; Backstops Richard.

Thursday 12th September: Presentation Evening

We gathered at the Winchmore Hill Sports Club to remember our Les Bailey fundraising ride of last June . Maz presented a cheque for £865 to Paul Jordan of the North London Hospice, and Paul then gave us a brief summary of the work of the hospice and the challenges they were facing. This was followed by presenations to riders. A magnificent effort from everyone!

A select group gathered at Trent Park on a bright but unseasonably cold morning. We set off along a familiar route up Waggon Road, and then diverted around the back streets of Potters Bar before heading out through Brookmans Park, Welham Green and Old Hatfield. We continued to Welwyn Garden City, arriving there just as the food festival was getting under way. The initial cold had given way to a warm sunny day, and we were all feeling a touch overdressed! A twenty minute pause for coffee and to get our breath back before we rode out to Ayot St Peter. Here we were able to view inside the church we have previously ridden past multiple times. After almost an hour we headed back to Welwyn Garden City, where we adjourned for another hour to sample offerings of the various food stalls. At about 2pm we rode southwards, initially retracing our outward route but diverting around country lanes between Hatfield and Northaw before crossing Potters Bar and finishing up by the Hadley memorial in Banet. At this point we separated to take our various routes home. Leader Peter M; Riders David, Geoff, Imram; Backstop Cathy.

Saturday 21st September: Tewin

Conflicting weather forecasts made the outlook uncertain so we set off from Beggars Hollow hoping to miss the worst of any rain. After tackling a couple of hills en route to White Stubbs Lane we proceeded through Brickendon, Bayford and Hertingordbury to our destination at Bumpkins cafe. Here we sat outside and enjoyed a leisurely lunch while chatting and putting the world to rights. On our return we passed through Letty Green before savouring the delights of Essendon Hill and on to Brookmans Park and Potters Bar. At this point a couple of riders departed to make their own way home and the rest of us continued down Coopers Lane Road, through Crews Hill and back to Beggars Hollow. Oh, and the weather turned out warm, dry and mostly sunny throughout the day. Leader: Geoff; Riders: Angie, David, Debbie, Deirdre, Imran, Paul L, Sue; Backstops: Peter M, Bridget

Sunday 6th October: Orchard Tea Rooms, Shenley

We gathered at the cycle friendly cafe in Oakwood Park ready for the off when the proprietor brought out some complimentary pastries. Obviously we had to stay and eat these before setting out. Riding out through New Barnet, we then went along Mays Lane and up the first big hill of the day to Barnet Gate. Here we recovered our breath before descending Rowley Lane to Borehamwood and then riding up to Shenley. We entered the Orchard grounds by the back route, avoiding a nasty right turn, were we enjoyed a variety of hot and cold snacks. Not to mention the chip thief but you know who you are! Returning down Mimms Lane and up the second major hill of the day, Deeves Hall Lane, to Ridge and from there down to the A1 crossing and up Galley Lane. From here we took the back streets of Barnet, losing one or two riders along the way as they found themselves near to their way home, until we returned to Oakwood Park about 2:30pm, and before the forecast rain! Leader Peter M; Riders Alan, Angie, Birgitta, Debbie, Deirdre, Geoff, Jeff, Paul, Stephen. Sue, Tim; Backstops Cathy, Richard.

Sunday 13th October: Weald Country Park

The mention of hills seemed to deter some of our members from signing up for this ride. However, 8 of us gathered at Beggars Hollow eager to meet the challenge and encountered Maz and Chris taking their dogs for a walk. We headed straight for Mott Street, the first and probably steepest of our climbs, and once this had been conquered we could enjoy coasting downhill to Loughton. From here we continued through Buckhurst Hill, Chigwell, Stapelford Abbots and on to South Weald. We did encounter one or two hills on route but were quite grateful for the chance to warm up on what was quite a chilly morning. On arriving at the Country Park we were disappointed to find the cafe very busy with long queues. Even worse, they had run out of hot food apart from sausage rolls heated in a microwave. We managed to refresh ourselves with tea, coffee, cake and soggy sausage rolls before embarking on our journey home. This proved to be easier than feared and took in some quiet country lanes. We did though have one final hill to climb as we cycled from Theydon Bois up towards High Beech. This done we could sail home down Avey Lane, through Gunpowder Park and back to Beggars Hollow. Leader Geoff; Riders Angie, Deirdre, Jeff, Peter M, Stephen, Tim; Backstop Rosa

Sunday 27th October: Southend Farm Lakes

Fourteen of us set off from the Coffee Break Café and headed down Green Lanes on our way to Muswell Hill. From here we made our way through East Finchley and admired the posh houses in Bishops Avenue before passing the entrance to Kenwood House. Soon we were sailing down some Hampstead lanes and on to Maida Vale. We continued to Westbourne Park before crossing Portobello Road, passing through Holland Park and reaching Fulham. We made a short photo stop outside Craven Cottage (Home of Fulham FC) before reaching our destination in Bishops Park. Some chose to eat in the park café and others decided to make their way straight across the road to Fulham Palace and eat in the café there. After a bit of time to look around we set off home passing through Hyde Park and Regents Park en route. Leader Geoff; Riders Bridget, Jeff, Keeley, Marion, Pat, Paul L, Peter M, Richard N, Rosa, Sarah C, Stephen, Sue; Backstop: Cathy

Sunday 10th November: Wanstead

To be supplied.

Sunday 17th November: St Albans

Seven of us gathered at Trent Park in bright but distinctly chilly November sunshine. We set off along a familiar route up Waggon Road and across the A1 horse bridge. After a stop in Shenley for a quick saddle adjustment we flew down Black Lion Hill then diverted from our usual route to pass through Napsbury Park before entering St Albans. Here we met with unexpectedly heavy traffic, but as we approached the centre the reason became obvious. The entire High Street was closed and a food fair was taking place, plus children’s anusements and a choir performance. We warmed up with a coffee then patronised various food stalls before the leader bullied us all into an early departure, saying he wanted to get back before dark. But we did stop by the Abbey to see a couple of judges in full regalia walking around the grounds, although whether this was a legal ceremony or a fancy dress party remains a mystery. We left St Albans along the Alban Way to Hatfield then home through Colney Heath, Water End, Potters Bar and Barnet, returning just as the light was fading. Leader: Peter M, Riders: Cathy, Geoff, Michèle, Pat, Stephen Backstop Richard (again!)
