The roads were now very wet and flooded
in places. We got to the
Farmers Boy pub just before noon.
We enjoyed a long lunch from the
appetizing menu to mid afternoon when the sun came out.
We set off eastwards to Wormley and the
Lea towpath, then diverted east as work was ongoing at Waltham Common lock,

haunted, the only spirits that were on offer were from behind the bar!
A welcome rendition of Happy Birthday was
sung to Andy who turned up by car.
Rode home by Kings Head Hill to Edmonton
as the rain began.

there to enjoy all the new bike bling on display.
Sunday 7.10.07 - Wadesmill
This ride and venue proved popular last
time so we thought we'd do it again! Meeting at the Greyhound at 9.30am we
rode north on the Lea towpath and had a break at Dobb's Weir, having made a
detour or two from the usual direct route to make a change.
Off the towpath at
Stanstead Abbotts for a short road section then off-road again along to
the old railway line, now a pathway, alongside the River Ash. The first of 2
fords here at the bottom of the slope is always fun.
Along to the village of Wareside, through
the lanes to Barwick Ford and onto Wadesmill (Info
here and
here), and The
Feathers Inn.
After some excellent fare, it was home

Sunday 23.09.07 - London
Freewheel
This was promising to be a huge event,
traffic free roads in central London for the
Hovis
London Freewheel event, we couldn't miss it. Everyone had to meet up at
various hubs that had been arranged around London before the final journey
into the Capital, for us it was Victoria Park in Hackney and Finsbury Park.
Our ride in to London was arranged in 2
groups. Group 1 by road to Finsbury Park and Group 2 by towpath to Victoria
Park. Both groups then joined others who had arrived from all over to
proceed along sign routes to the event.
Everyone enjoyed the traffic free 9 mile
route along the Embankment before converged onto St James Park for the
festival. There were stalls by Hovis, LCC, TFL, CTC etc, cycle display
teams, cycling jugglers, cycle maintenance workshops and lots more.

We went north west from Enfield via
Hadley Wood to South Mimms services for a tea stop. Then by country lanes to
Salisbury Hall, just before London Colney. This is the home of the
Mosquito
Aircraft Museum. The De Havilland aircraft company set up their Mosquito
design team here in 1939 and an aircraft legend was born. Other notable
occupants of the house have been Nell Gwynne, Sir Winston Churchill's mother
(he visited) and Sir Nigel Gresley.
After a tour of the museum and several of
our riders fancying themselves as pilots while sitting in the cockpits, we
rode off road to Ridge - puncture for Alan M - to a late lunch in sunshine
at the Old Guinea pub. We headed back after 5.00pm splitting into 2 groups
at Cockfosters.
Thanks to Dave L for the route and venue.

Epping Upland, Epping Green and Broadley Common to Roydon and The Crusader
pub for lunch.
Various meals were enjoyed as Ian and
Rose met us there....more late comers.

We split into 2 groups for the return,
those eager to get home - why? - by road, and the rest to amble back via

A warm day saw us cycle south on the Lea
towpath heading towards
3 Mills Island, the largest tidal mill in the UK. Just after setting
off, Andy fell off his bike and injured his ankle - his first time using
cleated pedals. We stopped at the Riverside Cafe by Springfield Park for
refreshments on the way, a regular watering hole of ours.
We continued via a circuitous route that
went along a section of the
Greenway to our destination and took in the historic surroundings. The
weather was quite hot by then so some had lunch in the shade and others went
around the museum.
Dr's Alan M and Rosa got frozen peas and
paracetamol for Andy as his ankle by then was quite painful and swollen.
After lunch about half the group
continued on their bikes to Tower Bridge via the Limehouse Cut and the rest
of us went home on the towpath.

Le Tour de France à Londres!
Our ride from Enfield saw Edmonton Cycle
Club, Enfield LCC and Southgate CC members ride to Hyde Park to see the
first everTour de France Prologue race in England, from London to Kent.
We had secure parking there for our
bikes, although trying to get about in the crowds was a bit difficult. We
watched the publicity caravan and then the riders warming up on the course.
Then from 3 to 6.15 the riders were tearing around the course, good views
being obtained from Hyde Park Corner with shade from the hot sun.
We met up again at the cycle park for the
return at about 7.30.
Thanks to the 'routemasters' for leading
the feeder rides there and back.

Sunday 24.06.07 -
Enfield's first Festival of Cycling
Held in the Cecil Road car park in
Enfield, our first Festival saw a variety of stalls and goings on including
some very strange bikes!
As well as Edmonton Cycling Club and our
Dr Bikes, other stalls included Enfield LCC, Enfield School of Cycling,
'Bikes R Us', TfL, Road Safety Team, and St Johns Ambulance.
A good selection of weird and wonderful
bikes were on offer to ride around the car park courtesy of the
Company of
Cyclists who were hired in for the day. They provided some strange bikes
including a bike with eccentric wheel hubs, bikes with mini wheels, a bike
with a wheelbarrow type area at the front for a passenger and recumbents.
ECC member Will came along and showed off
his 'Nancarrow Barrow' musical trailer (watch it on 'Youtube' - see below)
and Graham brought his home made 4 wheel trailer which people had a ride on.
The weather was mixed but it didn't put
off over 500 people who attended. We even saw some sun in the afternoon. We
managed to transport almost all of our stuff to the event by bike trailers
(including 2 marquees!) - Graham's and Andy's trailers proved themselves as
worthy load carriers.
It was a successful day and hopefully the
first of what we hope will be an annual event organised with Enfield
Council. Thanks go to Councilor Savva for being supportive of the event and
organising things, to ECC's own Richard for going to all those planning
meetings, and to Kieron, Andy and Paul P, who Doctor Biked almost
continuously throughout the day.
Helpers on the day - Richard, Kieron, Andy, Wayne, Elaine, Paul L, Paul P,
Dave L, Ian, Graham, Michele, Rosa, Maggie, Will and all club members who
helped out.
(sorry if i missed anyone out).
*Also, chocolate cake for Michele's
birthday handed out to all the helpers!
Thursday 21.06.07 - The
'famous' Ice Cream Ride, accept no substitute!
A mix of off and on road, via Palmers
Green, Alexandra Palace, Parkland Walk and Finsbury Park took us to
Marine Ices in
Haverstock Hill, Camden for our annual visit to this establishment,
for....guess what....ice cream! Trevor got lost on the way but we all waited
patiently (!) for him and got there eventually. The excellent pasta etc is
always worth waiting for.
A rain shower caught us on the way back,
arriving in Enfield about 1.00am.

From Enfield Civic Centre, we headed to
Forty Hall, then alongside Turkey Brook to the King and Tinker pub. Thunder

then headed back via the golf course and the Crown and Horseshoes pub for
the quiz, until closing time.
Results -
Peter 13, Ian 13, Trevor and Michele 12,
Kieron and Maggie 12, Sangeeta and Gunsel 10, Graham 9, Julie and Seamus 8,

Debbie, Mario + 2, Paul, Rupert.
Sunday 17.06.07 - 'Andy
and Alan's Enfield Parks Cycle Tour'
We started our tour in Enfield Town Park
on a nice bright day. First stop was Forty Hall, then along to Whitewebbs
Park and woodland paths through the woods. As it was Dave Le Fevre's first
time on his mountain bike, despite 40 years plus of cycling, he took a
tumble that needed first aid on his elbow at the hospital later. This led
through to Hilly Fields then to Trent Park where we stopped for a cafe
lunch.
On the way out of Trent Park, Paul had a
slight argument with a barrier and damaged his glasses. Onto Oakwood park,
through the small woodland, then to Grovelands Park for our first visit
here. We headed to Minchendon Oak gardens where Andy gave us a potted
history of the area and we admired the approximately 900 years old oak
tree....a 'Quercus Robur' for those that want to know!
We continued our journey down hill to
Arnos Park then up hill to Broomfield Park and back to Groveland Park again
where we stopped off for a tea break. We headed back to Town Park where our
journey ended.
Thanks to Andy & Alan, we thoroughly
enjoyed our park tour and the odd bits of local history that were thrown in
along the way. There's always lots to find out even about our local area.

Maggie, Rupert, Jim, Trevor, Michele, Rosa, Graham, Peter H, Dave L, Dave
Pg, Pave Pr, Bernice, Richard, Sujal, Jasmin, Anya, Bharat, Fred, Simon,

Sunday 03.06.07 - "Cycle
Promotions" and Hoddesdon
We all met at the Southbury Leisure
Centre for the "cycle
promotions" bike sale. Some of us just browse around whereas the rest of
the group bought some cycle parts and tried to carry them on their bikes in
the heat, some people just turned up for the sale to buy goods then loaded
them in their cars.
We finally left at 12.30pm, and went via
towpath to Hoddesdon where we rested on the grass at the Fish & Eels pub to
celebrate Trevor's 50th birthday with melted chocolate cakes and a couple of
bottles & snacks.
We rode back home after the celebration
via the towpath, Sangeeta getting lost for 15 mins after following the wrong
group of cyclists!

Sunday 20.05.07 - The '2
fords' ride!
Northwards from Brimsdown we stopped for
tea at the Riverside Cafe, Waltham Abbey where people just had to indulge in
cakes which made us almost an hour late to meet up with Andy, the ride
leader, on the towpath. The route headed up to Stanstead Abbotts and through
the town to a bridal path through Easneye Wood, then down to the first ford
through the river Ash where some people chickened out and took the bridge
which was to one side! This took us along the disused railway line to the
village of Wareside.
From here along quiet traffic free
country lanes, where unfortunately Liam had a tumble but was tended to by Dr
Denise M. We carried on through the lanes to Barwick ford which, as it is at
the bottom of a hill, allowed us to get up some speed for a nice big
splash...
We were surprise to see Llamas in the
farm yard there.
Continuing on to the old A10 (now
bypassed), we turned toward our destination for the day, the village of
Wadesmill and the
Feathers Inn pub where we enjoyed excellent home cooked fare. A puncture
fixed here by Dave M. where we discovered he was carrying six inner
tubes after his mishaps last time!!!!!!
After resting, we headed for Ware,
speeding along down hill into town where one rider took the train home. The
rest of us continued along the towpath to home.
Andy, Paul, Sangeeta, Kieron, Rosa, Will,
Laurence, Trevor, Denise, Dave M. Jim, Graham, Dave Pg, Liam, Daniel,

Kelvedon Hatch 'Secret Nuclear Bunker'
From the old Edmonton Leisure Centre we
rode north east to High Beech in Epping Forest for a tea stop in warm sunny
weather. Then along bridal paths through the forest east past Ivy Chimneys
and Toot Hill into deepest Essex negotiating a few small (!) hills.
We arrive at
Kelvedon
Hatch Bunker at about 1.30pm after 3 punctures and 1 injury (Jane slid
over on gravel).
While some took the tour through the
bunker and had lunch in the canteen, the rest of us had our lunch outside
and mended punctures.
The bunker is built into a hillside with
just a bungalow showing above ground, and 3 floors of corridors and rooms
going down 80 feet underneath, set up as it would have looked in the 50's
through to the 80's.
The ride back stopped at

bridge works over the New River to see how cycle friendly it's going to be.
We rode around finding clues that had
been placed before our tea stop at the cafe at Forty Hall. Jane had a
puncture to be fixed.
We ride the scenic route to the
Fallow Buck for lunch where the answers and Easter Egg prizes were given
out. The winning team was 'The Cycleteers' - Kieron, Andy, John A.

Sun 18.03.07 - A Windy
Hertfordshire
From Enfield Civic Centre, we set off
into a north wind, saying hello to Delia out shopping! Past the Whitewebbs
golfers (probably putting the blame for their poor shots onto the wind...)
to Burnt Farm Ride.
Dave left early as we rode through Goffs
Oak and Cuffley to Bayford.
Full up at the Bakers Arms due to it
being Mothers Day so onwards to Wormley West End and the Woodman pub who did
us lunch, sitting inside out of the wind, before heading south east to the
towpath and home. Cold with sunny spells and very strong gusty wind!
Paul, Dave L, Dave Pg, Jim, Graham, Ian,
Alan T, Alan M, Pat, Trevor, Michele, Denise, Peter, Richard.
Sun 25.02.07 - Towards
the Thames (and other incidents)
Yes, it was one of those days full of
incidents. Paul and Jim had to change their bikes just before the start due
to problems.
We set off very late (!) at 10.30 and
headed south to Tottenham Halfords to get new front brake system for Janes'
bike.
Then Dave got hurt in the car park and
needed hospital treatment to his ear!
We carry on to the cafe at Waterworks
Nature Reserve at 1.15 or so and had 2 punctures as we got there...
Some of the group head back after lunch
and the rest move on to Greenwich Park and THAT hill.
On the way back, Richard gets hurt after
finding a pot hole AND a puncture...!

Some very wet ground here thanks to the recent rain. Then along Coopers Lane
Road towards Potters Bar. Then some lovely hills, The Ridgeway and Carbone
Hill to Newgate Street village and lunch at the Coach and Horses.
Alan had a rear brake cable problem, and
Paul a front brake cable problem. (lack of maintenance and pre-ride

Paul, Dr Dave Pg, Dr Dave L, Graham
'Van Nicholas', Dr Kieron, Maggie, Michele, Trevor, Will, Andy, Jim, Liam,

We decided to have a lunchtime meet for a
change as people who had families could bring them along.
The food was excellent, and such good
value, with vegetarian choice. Dave and Andy went along a few weeks before
and helped to choose it.
We held a humorous photo caption
competition - just for fun - using photos from club rides of the past. (..we
will put them onto this site shortly!)
Michele and Andy received prizes for
being top of the points table for 2006. Thanks to Alan for putting together
the prizes, and especially Dave for the organising, and for entertaining us
with magic tricks.
